i saw this guy last thursday. i didn't know anything about him or what quite to expect when i got my ticket.. i just thought it sounded interesting from the writeup i saw. well, it turned out to be one of the most amazing and unique live performances i've ever been to. he's a one-man show, performing on this crazy-ass instrument he invented which he calls 'the magic pipe', as well as an array of other percussive bits and gadgets (including a cowboy boot). the range of sounds and beats he was busting out live was just mesmerising. you can look him up on youtube to get a sense of what he does, but it's nothing like seeing him in the flesh. go check him out if you get the chance!

so i went to the big day out last sunday.
i don't really like music festivals. i don't like being around people all that much to start with, let alone massive crowds.. and the douchebags come in droves for festivals. but hey, the lineup was good this year, and it turned out to be pretty awesome. some of the highlights for me..

josh pyke
i've been wanting to see josh pyke for a while. he's become one of my favourite singer/songwriters over the past year, with his profoundly likeable and somewhat quirky style. i just love the way his lyrics have this really poetic, anecdotal rhythm that just roll off his tongue. he played a great set, but i'd really like to see him again at a longer solo gig, and definately in a smaller, more intimite indoor setting.. he's better suited for that.

arcade fire
i know these guys are pretty big, and critically acclaimed by just about everyone, but i wasn't really aware of them until a couple of months ago. but in those couple of months, i've listened to their neon bible album inside out.. easily one of the best albums of 2007. so given all that, i was pretty pumped to see them live. not only did they not disappoint, but they just about stole the show. they had such an incredibly rich sound, and an amazing energy coming off the stage.  plus they're the first band i've seen to actually use the stage itself as percussion.

björk
ah, the big one. björk is pretty much the reason why i bought a ticket in the first place. she gave us a couple of scares, first with dishing out some psycho on a photographer in new zealand, then by nearly busting her vocal chords in sydney. but she made it, she played, and she kicked major ass. the entire set was pretty phenomenal, but the climax was when she put on clown shoes to stomp through declare independence as confetti exploded onto us. awesome. it was also really cool how there were lcd screens set up that showed you all the crazy gizmos that the djs were using. worth every cent!

sarah blasko
probably the most disappointing thing about the day was having to miss out on sarah blasko's set, since she was on while björk was playing. that, and missing out on spoon to get a good spot for arcade fire. but anyway, i still got to catch the last few songs, and she was amazing as ever. i've been to one of her shows before, but i like her a lot more now than i did back then, so it was a shame to miss most of it. nevertheless, i adore her music and her incredible voice. i think i read it described as 'haunting' once.. that's a pretty good description.. just beautiful.

worst news ever.
björk had to cancel her performance at the sydney big day out today, due to swollen vocal chords. i'd be so despondent right now if i was from sydney.. what a let down.

"björk and the producers of big day out hope for a swift recovery in anticipation of a continued australian tour. after a standout show at the gold coast big day out this is a great disappointment to björk, who is on her first tour of australia in twelve years."

that's somewhat encouraging, but i'm not holding my breath.
i really hope she gets better soon. perth is waiting! :crying:

i'd been waiting a fair while for this, and like a lot of other people was quite excited about it. hype usually leads to disappointment, so i usually don't get too caught up in it and keep my expectations open. it seems that the movie has divided people into love/hate camps, which i guess is inevitable with anything that a) has hype, and b) doesn't conform. i for one thought it was absolutely brilliantly done. the hand-held camera style was completely immersive, and put you right in the action. you went through everything that the characters did, and you knew everything that they did about what was happening.. which wasn't much. i find it annoying how people have complained about there being so many unanswered questions. i don't care what happens afterwards. i don't care what the monster is, where it came from, or why it's ripping the shit out of manhattan. the movie doesn't need to explain these things, because it doesn't matter.. it's about being in the now, and experiencing this thing first-hand. it creates intrigue, and leaves things to your imagination.. that's a good thing! the acting was great, and all the characters were pretty likeable. the effects were just perfect.. seamless and incredibly impressive. plus there's a sneaky little easter egg after the credits. can't recommend this enough.

i dunno if i was tired or just stupid at the time, but i found this movie a little hard to follow at the start. there's a lot of people who are introduced, but it didn't really take that long to get a handle on things, and figure out who's who, and where they stand within the story. the movie is long, but it didn't really feel it.. it keeps you pretty engrossed the whole time with some strong acting from denzel washington and all the supporting players. pretty amazing story, and a true one to boot.

pterodactyl
pterodactyl
haven't heard of it? the tagline is "ptowering pterror". this movie is absolutely stunning, but not in a good way. some of this movie is so bad it's good, but most of it is so bad it's gone past good and back to bad again. it's hard to decide which is the most embarrasing aspect.. the effects, the acting or the writing. if it was trying to be tongue-in-cheek, then it failed horribly at that too.. it was just flatout lame. so it goes something like this: a professor and bunch of students (complete with good old clichés like the nervous geeky guy and the hot bitchy girl) go on this trip to check out a volcano that's supposedly full of fossils. turns out it's totally full of dinosaurs instead. meanwhile there's another equally thin plotline of u.s. army soldiers (led by fucking coolio of all people) on a covert mission to hunt down some bad guys. their paths cross, nearly everyone dies, yada yada. it's funny how just the slightest touch by one of those pterodactyls will cause random limbs to fly clean off. amazing.

this wasn't too bad for a fairly enjoyable, light movie, although it felt a bit flat and all too played out in the wake of bruce almighty. there were some quite funny parts, although i think it was the cast more than anything that was holding it together. it was full of glaring plotholes, but that's kind of a stupid thing to say with a movie like this. not terrible, but don't go out of your way to see it.

i've been wanting to see this movie for a while, but only got around to it yesterday. all i'd pretty much heard about it is "it's not as good as garden state". maybe it's not, but i found it to be nearly on par with it, with an equally good ensemble cast and soundtrack. it's a fairly sad movie, and has feels pretty true to life throughout. i loved it.

i was actually pleasantly surprised with this. firstly because i've heard nothing but bad things about it, and second because i didn't know rose byrne was in it.. and rose byrne is awesome. anyway, it wasn't as good as the first, but probably a little better than the average zombie movie.

sunshine
sunshine
another movie which i meant to see earlier. the ending of this movie really let it down.. if you've seen it you'll know exactly which bit i mean. after building nicely as an interesting sci-fi thriller, it completely changes directions into a crazy horror story, similar to how event horizon played out. up to that point it was great.. interesting concept, good cast with some interesting character dynamics, and some stunning visuals. it was really unfolding to become a fantastic movie, then the suspension of disbelief was just pushed too far and it got stupid. pity.

crazy as fuck

what the fuck is with tom cruise? seriously.
you have to have a look at this video of him talking about his grandiose ideology of what it means to be a scientologist. he makes them sound like superheroes. this is an actual quote:

"when you're a scientologist, and you drive by an accident, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you're the only one who can really help... we are the way to happiness. we can bring peace and unite cultures."

no, really. he said that.
it's amazing how he goes on for ten minutes, and never really says anything about anything.

"you're on board, or you're not on board.
okay? but just.. if you're on board, you're on board. just like the rest of us. period."

???

it's really beyond description.

in other crazy-ass celebrity news, björk went all primal on another paparazzi again. i just hope she doesn't get arrested before she makes it here to perth next month.
