into the wild
into the wild
this was a rather amazing movie based on an even more amazing true story. it's been interesting reading some of the responses to this film.. some see the main character as an absolute hero, and others as a selfish, insensitive idiot. the ambivalence you feel towards him leaves you with mixed emotions at the end. i liked the way it makes you contemplate lots of things about life.. what it means to be part of society, what it means to be part of a family, what it means to be free, what it means to be happy, what it means to be alive, what it means to be human. great movie.

the darjeeling limited
the darjeeling limited
wes anderson is one of my favourite filmmakers. i fell in love with his style with rushmore, and each of his movies since have all been outstanding, quirky comedies with great casts and great soundtracks. i find it hard to compare them with any other films too.. they're so completely unique, rich with detail, and just that little bit surreal. i'm pleased to say that this movie didn't disappoint.

i am legend
i am legend
i was pretty disappointed with this. i haven't read the book, but i knew the gist of what happens in it before i saw the movie. not only did they totally remove the most interesting aspects of the story, the entire significance of the title was lost too. i guess it's not too bad a movie if you know nothing of the source material. still, it wasn't anything we haven't seen before, and the effects on the darkstalker vampire-zombie things were subpar.. in fact they looked laughable in parts. i expected a lot more from a big budget 2007 movie. on the positive side, i liked how quiet and slow paced much of the movie was, and there were two very good standout scenes; where robert goes after his dog into the infested building, and the leadup to the 'fred trap'. will smith was also good in the role.

avpr: aliens vs predator - requiem
alien vs predator - requiem
i'd see any movie to do with the alien franchise, simply because giger's alien is the fucking coolest movie monster ever created. the predator isn't far off either. it's obvious that at this point, it's near impossible that anything post-alien 3 will ever reach 'classic' status. that ship has sailed. i don't throw as much hate towards alien resurrection or the first avp as the average fan, but it has to be said that neither was particularly good.. and they would have been easily forgotten if they didn't have the aforementioned 'fucking coolest movie monster ever created' to hang onto. anyway, avpr was a lot better than the first. better casting, better acting, better action, better gore, pretty much better everything. aesthetically, it was a pretty dark movie. that coupled with some pretty frenetic camerawork meant you rarely got a really good, lingering, clear shot of either creature. i for one thought was a great decision, and it helped to preserve some of the mystery and intrigue of the creatures, which is a concept that's been inevitably lost over time.

Damn, I have to see"No country for old men". I heard that it was good, and my previous English teacher highly recommended the novel.

i haven't read the book, but i've heard the movie is very faithful to it.

I've been recommended to see No Country for Old Men already, and I've heard some great things about it.

As for I Am Legend, I'm surprised you gave it three stars. Those two scenes you mentioned were great, really stand out scenes. But the scene on the pier when they all went at his car was just, well crap. Quite a letdown.

Apart from Cloverfield, there's not a lot that interesting me movie wise. It's been so flat all last year. D:

i agree about that scene, but it wasn't a wholly terrible movie. just disappointing is all. and didn't live up to the potential of what it could have been. 2007 was rather flat, yeah.. although it wasn't all bad. there's been some real gems amongst the crap.

i really hope cloverfield lives up to its promise.. i'm pretty pumped about that one. actually i just saw american gangster last night.. that was really good. then there's hellboy 2, iron man and jumper.. they all have potential, so 2008 isn't off to a bad start

It surprised me that you liked AVP 2, because it's got horrible reviews in the papers and on net.
I share the same meaning you have about the series, so I'm sure gonna check the new one out with a bit more positive mind =D

thx! :boogie:

I saw I am Legend recently also-& was disappointed-I think they could've pushed the whole emotional & meaning a lot further. I liked the dog in the film though ;)

I really want to see Into the Wild-I think Emilie Hirsh is pretty outstanding.
